about the artist →
Johanna Karvonen is a Finland-Swedish artist based in Italy.
Her artistic practice is shaped by an intuitive approach to colour, material and texture, exploring memory, identity and transformation through layered surfaces.
Working across painting, material-based art, murals and site-specific works, Karvonen moves between figuration and abstraction. Her work develops through a process of layering, experimentation and discovery, allowing the qualities of each material to become part of the visual and emotional language of the work. Living and working in Italy, Karvonen draws from the interplay between Nordic and Mediterranean environments, personal experience and the physical process of making art.
